'Into the Wild'-inspired teen found dead in Oregon


An Arizona teenager who vanished in the Oregon woods may have been inspired by "In to the Wild," the sunday paper by Jon Krakauer using the true story of the youngster who headed solo into the Alaskan wilderness and ultimately died there, his father said Sunday.

The teen's body was discovered Tuesday, on a heavily-wooded hillside just 1,000 yards through the vehicle he abandoned near Riddle, Ore.

Johnathan Croom had talked with his parents about "Into your Wild" and told a buddy he wished to try to escape.


Croom also talked to his parents about Christopher McCandless, whose journey to Alaska was documented from the book. McCandless lost the battle his worldly possessions to reside in the Alaska wilderness, only to die there.

Douglas County sheriff's spokesman Dwes Hutson said crews searching the spot for days after Croom's green SUV is discovered were seeking a live individual. They called his name making a lot of noise, because they had since a couple weeks ago, but heard nothing back.

Then, Monday night, they found texts indicating how the university student planned to kill himself. The invention on the texts changed the character in the search, he explained.

"That led us to think that she was more likely to accomplish this," said Mr. Hutson. "During these form of cases, sometimes people leave very detailed notes and instructions. Sometimes, that you do not."

Hutson says crews created dogs accustomed to find cadavers, and located the 18-year-old Croom's body within hours.

The Apache Junction, Ariz., college student was scheduled to push home from Seattle and was due back Aug. 17.

Croom's father said Monday night his son was grieving the finish of your recent relationship.

"He would be a child who had a broken heart and headed out to try to find himself," said David Croom, Johnathan's father. "We're eager for finding out just what exactly happened."

He thanked everyone who helped hunt for his son and added, "Please pray for our family."

Trapped on video tape, a 19-year-old from Oklahoma disappeared after lecture his parents about "Into your Wild" and setting out to evaluate himself against the Oregon wilderness. Dustin Self's truck is discovered in April on Steens Mountain in southeast Oregon. The last seek out Self was at the spring, after snow melted, however it yielded no hints to his location.
